The New Orleans/Gulf South Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers, Inc. (ASMP) is a strong, vibrant chapter with over 65 members covering an area including all of Louisiana, most of Mississippi, southern Alabama, and parts of Arkansas. Please review the Members list at left for the area of specialty you might need. Chapter President David Spielman can help you with any information not found elsewhere on this site. Anyone wishing to be informed of chapter programs and events may email their mailing address and phone number to Membership Cmte. Chairman George Long. The ASMP was founded in 1944 by a handful of journalists to fight for the rights of photographers. Today, ASMP has more than 5,000 members in 40 chapters throughout the U.S. and 40 other countries, most being full-time professionals photographing primarily for publication in various media for the advertising, corporate/industrial, and editorial markets. ASMP members have listed some 60 areas of specialty in which they work. ASMP has three purposes: •To protect and promote the interests of photographers whose work is for publication. •To promote high professional standards and ethics. •To cultivate friendship and mutual understanding between photographers. ASMP is photographers helping photographers. Why should you hire a member of ASMP for your next photography assignment? It's simple: you want the best; you expect the best; so, hire the best. Membership in ASMP is a credential recognized worldwide as a commitment to professionalism, quality, ethics, and as a sign of proven experience. ASMP members are dedicated to their profession, their craft, their business, and to their clients. They know what it takes to produce the images that clients want and will devote their energies to meeting clients' expectations. To be accepted as a General Member of ASMP, photographers must be actively and professionally engaged in photography for publication with three or more years of experience. And applicants must go through a proof of publication review by their peers at the chapter level, or be accepted through a national committee. Additionally, ASMP members continue to receive business information throughout their careers. That means they stay on top of not only technological developments but also are abreast of business techniques. And that means you get a true professional working with you from concept to completion. And ASMP members are backed by an international network, something which can help you. For example, if for some reason the ASMP member you contact cannot accept your assignment, chances are that he or she can refer you to a colleague who can. Look at our history and our accomplishments on the behalf of professional photographers and you will see why the best are members of ASMP and they have photographed virtually everything under the sun.
